August 2006 Wine Tasting Notes: Paso Robles Syrahs.
2002 Pear Valley Syrah, Paso Robles.
|
 |
Deep vibrant ruby
color with purple hue. A robust nose of chocolate, peppery spice
and blackberries, is bound by lightly floral and oaky notes. The
palate is an interplay of blackberry and currant on a firm
toasty oak backbone. An upper medium body with plush tannins
gives this wine lots of backbone. Peppery spice and blackberry
flavors persist on the finish. Alcohol is a bit hot on the
throat. |

This is a full
bodied Syrah. It is a hefty and flavorful wine and an ideal
companion to barbecue or hearty, savory meat dishes. It will
likely reach its peak in 5 - 10 years. Recommended to
enthusiasts of bold wines. |

Detail
This Syrah
indicates much potential for Pear Valley. It was made by Josh Bergstrom
of Bergstrom Winery in Oregon. It was aged 24 months in new and neutral,
American and French oak barrels. The grapes for this wine came from the
18 acre block planted at Pear Valley in 1998.
Pear Valley Vineyard is a relative unknown
growing Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon in western
Paso
Robles. The owners, Tom and Kathleen Maas are
developing an on-site winery and tasting room for their 100
acre
vineyard. Currently, Pear Valley releases are available through a number
of retail establishments.
