July 2006 Wine Tasting Notes: 2003 Pinot Noirs.
2003 Byron Pinot Noir, Bien Nacido
Vineyard
 |
Deep alluring
dark ruby color and clarity. Nose reveals light floral notes and
an elegant blend of cherry and currant,
Bien Nacido Spice:
(cinnamon, cardamom, clove)
with a hint of tobacco and chocolate. Dark berries wrap around
light oak on the palate. Hard spice is present in the
background. Tannins are soft and smooth. The finish is long with
an interplay of light oak, tannins and hints of tangy
strawberry. Alcohol is noticeable but not overpowering. This wine is
elegant and streamlined. There is a finesse to the blend of
aromas and flavors. There is a potential for this wine to evolve
more over 5-10 years. |

Like its blended
brother, this single vineyard pinot noir is a star. 2003
definitely turned out well for Byron's Pinots. This wine does
not require any esoteric knowledge to enjoy. At the same time,
its sophistication and richness are immediately evident even to
a novice. This high scorer will please everyone. |

Detail
This wine,
Byron's first
vineyard-designated Pinot Noir from Bien Nacido, was aged for 10 months
in French Oak, 30% new.
The Bien Nacido Vineyard is another of
Santa Maria Valley’s older vineyard sites, tracing its roots back to
1837. It also bears one of the most formidable reputations. Fruit from
this 800 + acre vineyard is sought out by many wine makers. Two of the
wines reviewed this month are sourced entirely from this vineyard. On
the grounds of the vineyard are two wine making facilities: one is
shared by Qupe and Au Bon Climat and the other to Tantara Winery.
Bien Nacido Vineyard is also one of the
major viticultural nurseries for certified varietal budwoods.
