August 2006 Wine Tasting Notes: 2004 Pinot Noirs.

2004 Presidio Estate Pinot Noir, Santa Barbara County.

Medium red in color. Earthy notes of mushroom and tobacco open the nose. These are balanced by cherry, raspberry and strawberry. Spice and cola scents are present. On entry, there is a prominent note of hard spice followed by cherry and strawberry on the mid palate. A very light body, with a mineral edge lay the foundation for white chocolate notes. Minimal tannins lead into a medium finish of strawberries and hard spice.

RWB Score: 87 breakdown

14.2% Alcohol

$29.95 Retail (from winery);             Total production unknown.

This is a light-bodied wine with Burgundian characteristics. Ideal for enthusiasts of light wines, it will also have appeal to purists who appreciate light bodied Old World styles.

Detail

Unfiltered, this wine was barrel aged 12 months in French oak.

Presidio is a certified organic and biodynamic vineyard. A hands-off approach characterizes vineyard management. Fruit for this wine is sourced from Presidio's estate vineyard west of the Santa Rita Hills, near Lompoc. The vineyard is planted to the 115, 667, and 777 clones selected specifically for this vineyard based on its microclimate.

The vineyard and winery were founded in 1991 as a realization of winemaker Douglas Braun’s vision of implementing Old World wine making philosophy in Santa Barbara County. In addition to Pinot Noir, Presidio grows Chardonnay and Syrah. The Presidio philosophy is focused around minimal manipulation of the wines, aging in the highest quality French oak, and bottling wines unfined and unfiltered.
