September 2006 Wine Tasting Notes:

2004 Presidio Sangiovese, Hallauer Vineyard, Santa Ynez Valley.

This Sangiovese displays a nearly inky-red color. Sweet oaky notes start the nose with dark cherry and subtle blueberry following. Subtle hints of hard spice (cinnamon and nutmeg) are noted. The palate is straightforward with tart cherry and strawberry followed by a hint of orange peel. Strawberry and orange peel play on the medium length finish.

RWB Score: 89 breakdown

14.1% Alcohol

$17.95 Retail (from winery);        Production volume unknown

A tangy, medium bodied Sangiovese that pairs moderate fruit flavors with bright but not overpowering acidity. The nose is more robust than the palate - which opens up with a little time. Alcohol is a bit bold for this level of fruit extraction. This wine should please most and will go well with red meat and dishes with hearty sauces.

Detail

This wine was aged 14 months in 100% French oak.

Presidio vineyard and winery were founded in 1991 as a realization of winemaker Douglas Braun’s vision of implementing Old World wine making philosophy in Santa Barbara County. In addition to Pinot Noir, Presidio grows Chardonnay and Syrah. The Presidio philosophy is focused around minimal manipulation of the wines, aging in the highest quality French oak, and bottling wines unfined and unfiltered.  The estate vineyard is a certified organic and biodynamic vineyard. A hands-off approach characterizes vineyard management.

Hallauer Vineyard is a certified organic vineyard. It was planted on the Southeastern hillside of Ballard Canyon during the spring of 1998 by Dr. Wolfgang Hallauer. Currently, Cabernet Franc, Sangiovese, and Syrah are grown in amounts not yet know to redwinebuzz.com. Hallauer Vineyard also produces its own wines under the auspices of winemaker Jason Drew.
