2005 Kendall-Jackson Seco Highlands Pinot noir, Arroyo Seco.

This Pinot noir is a medium depth ruby to garnet color with a smoky purple rim and excellent clarity. At first approach, it offers medium intensity aromas of pepper, dusty loam and smoky, gamey bacon. These are tamed with a little time and are balanced out by light cherry which intensifies with decanting. In the mouth, medium intensity juicy black cherry is accented by hibiscus and pepper. An upper medium-bodied wine with a smooth texture owing to tea-like tannin, this Pinot has plush, creamy and soft mouthfeel. A medium finish of cherry is laced with notes of crème fraîche, hints of orange rind and a bit of heat.

BOTTOM LINE: Good, with appealing characteristics. Recommended.

Aromatically complex and evolving in the glass to the last sip, this young pinot needs decanting. It offers bright, vibrant fruit and smoky game intertwined with pepper and earthy notes. It needs some more time to integrate. Hold for a year or two and enjoy for another five years thereafter with poultry, salmon, pork and similar meats as well as roasted vegetables and mushrooms.
