2005 Tolosa Chardonnay, Edna Valley

This Chardonnay is straw colored with excellent clarity. It starts with medium intensity Crème brûlée aromas. These are followed by Light vanilla and dried tropical fruit and notes of citrus rind and citrus blossom. There is also a hint of pleasant mineral nettle or currant leaf at higher temperatures. In the mouth, light citrus and pineapple flavors take center stage on a medium body with clean, crisp edges with nice minerality but a soft, slightly hot and flabby center. It finishes short to medium with citrus, mineral and a bit of heat.

14.2% Alcohol

$20.00 Retail (from winery);

5,210 full cases (750 ml) and 496 cases (375 ml) produced.

This Chardonnay comes on very seductively with subtlety and breadth, at first. It stumbles and breaks rhythm as it trades acidity for some heat and oak. Admittedly, the latter is reserved and judiciously applied and the overall composition hides the warmth fairly well. I'd expect it to cellar well for about 5 years max and in the mean time it should pair well with Asian dishes. Watch the spice with this one if you are sensitive to heat.

BOTTOM LINE: Fairly good. Worth trying.

Production Detail:

Made from 100% Estate Chardonnay (Dijon Clones 76 and 96 and a selection known as "Tepesquet") this wine was fermented in French oak (25% to 30% new). The lots underwent weekly bâtonnage. About 60% of the lots were allowed to complete malolactic fermentation. All the lots were then kept sur lie until blending, which included abut 10% steel tank fermented wine. The final blend was kept in tanks for an additional five months prior to bottling.
