2005 Tolosa No-Oak Chardonnay, Edna Valley

This Chardonnay is pale straw in color with great clarity. Aromatically, it offers medium intensity tropicals focused around pineapple and medium intensity citrus flowers followed by light aromas of waxy lime rind, notes of mineral and hints of dried guava and pleasant nettle or currant leaf. In the mouth, light citrus and more vague tropical flavors are accented by notes of pineapple and lemon drop. The body is light with distinct a mineral character which makes for clean lines. Those frame a somewhat soft mid palate. The acids are rather appropriate but seem to need a little extra zing. The wine is smooth with a slightly waxy mouth feel. A medium finish of citrus and pineapple is laced mineral and ends warm.

14.2% Alcohol

$16.00 Retail (from winery);

5,100 cases (750 ml) produced.

This Chardonnay keeps a good, even pace remaining light but just a bit hot. The latter detracts from its finer side: its minerality. It should cellar well for up to five years and can be enjoyed with white meat dishes.

BOTTOM LINE: Fairly good. Worth trying.

Production Detail:

Made from 100% estate Chardonnay, the fruit for this wine was gently pressed and cool-fermented in steel tanks. No malolactic fermentation was allowed. The wine spent 10 months in tank with periodic bātonnage. A "Stelvin+" screw cap closure with a longer "skirt" was selected for this bottling.
