Here
it is! The new
redwinebuzz.com
newsletter! It certainly is a relief to us as it has been a long time
coming. We've been busy little wine lovers over the past four months and
we'd like to reassure everyone that we will continue to keep going
stronger month after month. It has been a busy year for us and many
things have changed.
Most of the changes
are behind the scenes. All of them are for the better! These changes
will help the website function better and offer more to our visitors.
Additionally, we will continue to increase our presence in the world of
Central Coast wine. You may see us at a number of the events in wine
country.

Long before Rich and Claudia
Smith arrived at their current
estate, Spanish explorers had named the area: "Paraiso"
("Paradise"). Those
who have the opportunity to visit the hospitality room in the winery, will see the photograph taken from West
Terrace Vineyard (above) which paints
the vineyards and Salinas Valley in spectacular pre-dawn colors that would make
Thomas Kinakde throw down his brush and palette in anger. It is that
awesome, breathtaking beauty of the place that has nourished the soul of
the Smith family over the past 30 years.
Through the past 3 decades,
Rich Smith and his family have been wine innovators and pioneers. While
contributing to local viticulture, they have maintained their own style.
One has to stop short of painting any person in larger-than-life colors
of nobility and romanticized notions of some altruist guardian of the
soil. Wine is, after all, a business with its pitfalls and tribulations
that seem mundane to someone immersed in them on a daily basis. What
comes through from spending time with him, is that Rich Smith is a
genuine man, an individualist with a passion for what he does. And
therein lies the artistry, the romance of the common, daily tasks and
pursuits carried out with a determination and the aim to excel. Paraiso
wines are evidence of that.

As summer approaches, more and more
wine enthusiasts will be drawn to wine country. To avoid cooking
your wines in the car, you should prepare well if you plan to buy
wines at tasting rooms. Anticipate the weather, pack blankets, and
preferably, a large cooler. Parking in shaded spots helps but is not
always possible. Insulation is the key, use ice packs sparingly to
keep the wines below 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

Doug
Meador founded Ventana Vineyards in the early 1970s. Over the last 3
decades he became a prominent figure of Monterey county viticulture: as
an advocate, a pioneer and innovator and as an educator. He developed
the Ventana and Meador labels. In September of 2006,
the Meadors sold
the Ventana brand, vineyards, winery and tasting
room to a group of local winemakers and grape growers who make up
Ventana Vintners, LLC.
Ventana Vineyard’s
lead winemaker is Reggie Hammond (he retains that position after the
recent transfer of ownership). He and Dough came together in 1997 when
Dough was looking for someone with experience in managing a large
production operation and a passion for wine.
Reggie maintains
Ventana's goal to craft wines of "European
sensibility and an abundance of California fruit" while offering a good
value.
