2008 Hospice du Rhône

"From Roussanne With Love"

From May 1 to May 3, 2008, the 16th Annual Hospice du Rhône will be held at the Paso Robles Event Center in Paso Robles, California.  The event is a combination of education, fun and fellowship.  Registration began on Monday, January 7, 2008 but tickets are still available.

The Deal

16 years ago, John Alban and Mathew Garretson started a festival focused on, then little-known, Viognier. It has evolved to a 3-day global Jamboree of Rhône wine lovers and producers.  Taking place during the first weekend of May, Hospice du Rhône (HdR) offers the fulfillment of a Rhône wine lover's heart's desires. Although the Rhone Rangers put on a similar tasting in San Francisco, and smaller ones up and down the western seaboard including Paso Robles, the Hospice du Rhône is a far larger and possibly more widely publicized Rhône wine festival in Paso Robles. Geographically, it is also more desirable for those living in Southern California.

Read our report from the 2007 Hospice du Rône.

Also, read our notes from our visit to the Robert Hall Winery during the Dine Around following the 2007 HdR.

Each year, the event consists of two very large tastings, four seminars, the Rhône Bowl, the Syrah Shoot-Out (a friendly contest between winemakers), a live auction and a Dine-Around Dinner series (hosted by local wineries). See the HdR site for a schedule of events and details on seminars. The 2005 and 2006 vintages in both southern France and California have received much positive commentary. This year's event is likely to feature wines from these vintages. Additionally, each year brings the opportunity to taste a broad spectrum of Rhône wines and talk to their producers and importers.

The Paso Robles Fairgrounds is home to the annual Hospice du Rhône.

What to do.

Visit the Hospice du Rhône registration page to purchase tickets.

If you will be attending, there are a few tips we have for his event (and others of its size):

1). Wear dark, comfortable clothing. You will get splattered with wine.

2). Minimize what you carry. It gets crowded.

3). Plan and strategize. You can't taste all the wines in three hours.

4). Eat. There is usually plenty of food to keep your stomach full and your head clear.

5). Spit. You'll get more out of the event and we'll all get home safely.

Lodging also sells out quickly, but you may be able to find hotels in Atascadero and points a bit further south, such as the San Luis Obispo area that do not require a terribly long drive.

Several area restaurants fill up quickly. Make reservations if you want to have dinner in the Paso Robles area.

We hope to see you there!
