 Reviews Main

2003 Ventana Vineyards Syrah, Monterey, Arroyo Seco.

SENSORY ASSESSMENT:

This wine is deep smoky garnet in color with a purple edge. The nose stars strong with pepper and thyme up front. Lots of cherry and and hint of chocolate follow. The palate displays cherry, a milder pepper and spice character and the salty minerality characteristic of this AVA as well sweet oak notes.  A medium body and supple, slightly chewy tannins and appropriate acids make for a smooth, rich savory mouthfeel. The cherry, light pepper and mineral core of this wine continues into the finish.

OPINION:

The 2003 Ventana Syrah, with abundant extraction and distinct minerality is a lovely expression of varietal characteristics and instructive of the influence of terroir. Dominant spices interplay with savory herbs to make this offering a partner for densely flavored foods.  Expected to drink well through at least 2008.

BOTTOM LINE:

Good, with appealing characteristics.

Recommended.
