The following is an explanation of the pronunciation notation used by redwinebuzz.com.

 

To start with, some general rules:

Fighting wine ignorance one person at a time.

  • Each word is broken down into manageable syllables.
  • Syllables in capital letters receive more emphasis than those in lower case letters.
  • Syllables are separate by a hyphen "-"
  • Syllables separated by an underscore "_" should be pronounced more like one syllable.
  • All consonants are pronounced in the standard way unless specified otherwise here
  • To avoid confusion, the letter "C" is not used in this notation system.

VOWELS

CONSONANTS

a

Standard American English pronunciation, as in "Pal".

ch Standard "CH" sound in "Chair" or "Which".
ah A slightly nasal "A" sound, as in "Blah". dzh  A hard "J" sound like the sound at the end of "Taj" or "Garage" and "Mirage".
ai The long American English pronunciation of "I" as in "Idea" or "Irene". g, gh A hard "G" sound like in "Get" or "Dog".
ay A long "A" sound as in "Baby". j Standard American English "J", as in "Joe" or "Jeep".
au Pronounced like the "ow" in "Cow" or the "ou" in "Ouch". k Standard American English "K", as in "Yak" or "Keep".
awh A throatier and slightly nasalized version of "ah" Pronounced like the "ou" in "Cough" or the "augh" in "Caught". sh Standard "SH" sound in "Show" or "Cash".
e, eh Standard American English pronunciation, as in "Bed" or "Get". ts The equivalent of a soft "C" sound. Harder than an "S". Start with the tongue touching the back of the front teeth. As at the end of "Cats" or in "Tse-tse fly".
ee Standard American English pronunciation like in "Bee" or "Keep".
i Standard American English short pronunciation of the "I" in "Bin", "Trim" or "Fist".
ohn A nasal sound, somewhere between "I" and "O", similar to the "O" sound in "Own". Pronounced like the "IN" in "Chopin".
o Standard American English pronunciation like in "Done" or "Above".
oh Long American English pronunciation like in "Go" .
oo Standard American English pronunciation like in "School" or "Book".
u Standard American English pronunciation like in "Curl" or "Hurt".
uh Pronounced like the "U" in "Blur" or the "I" in "Fir".
y The long American English pronunciation of "Y" as in "Young" or "Buy".
