October 2006 Although you may be eager to relish those beautiful wines you picked up during your trip though wine country, don't open them for at least a few days after returning home. Vibration during travel may shock and bruise the wine and it may need up to a week to settle. “Bottle shock” or “bottle sickness” is most commonly seen just after bottling and is characterized by muted or diminished aromas and flavors but resolves after a few weeks. Be very careful, also, not to let your newly acquired beauties to be exposed to excess heat during travel. Heat stress can lead to "heat shock". The flavors of the wine will be muted and taste ‘cooked’. Unlike bottle shock, the wine cannot recover from this.
