April, 2007.

In the summer, wine enthusiasts are drawn to wine country. To avoid cooking your wines in the car, you should prepare well if you plan to buy wines at tasting rooms. Anticipate the weather, pack blankets, and preferably, a large cooler. Insulation is the key, use ice packs sparingly and wrap them in a towel to keep the inside of the cooler to be below 75 degrees. Park in shaded spots and leave windows open enough to allow some of the heat to escape. Cover the cooler with blankets. If you find yourself unprepared, most tasting rooms should have styrene foam shipping containers in the back room. Ask and you shall receive  - sometimes at a nominal fee (also available at BevMo). If spending the night, take the wines into your hotel room. Drastic shifts in temperature (which are common in wine country) are as bad as sustained heat.
