Two Clos Pepe Vineyard vineyard workers: Rogelio Reyes, 29 and Ramon Cisneros Acosta, 42, drowned in an apparent accident in the irrigation pond at the Sta. Rita Hills estate. The Pepe family was out of the country and made arrangements to return immediately on learning of the tragedy. Steve and Catherine Pepe are labor attorneys who forged strong, familial bonds with their vineyard workers and provide their full-time, permanent, vineyard team higher compensation and benefits than is standard for the industry and area. The Parcellation of Paso Formation of the Paso Robles AVA was rushed in 1983 and the 614,000 acre appellation is so varied in climate, geography and geology (terroir) that many growers and winemakers have been seeking to distinguish their own area of the San Luis Obispo County AVA. Not everyone is in agreement and as many as 11 applications for non-overlapping sub-appellations are expected to be submitted to the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) by the end of next month.
