Wine in the News: March 2007.

redwinebuzz.com brings you news from the world of wine. Our goal for this section is not to provide comprehensive coverage of an issue, but to make each entry a gateway to the complete story. The only exception to this is when we are the only source of the story. We seek out stories that are relevant and interesting - whether they are serious or not. Older stories are in our wine news archive.

Wine as brain food.

Most of us, no doubt, think of imbibing as "pickling our brains" or "killing brain cells". New research at Columbia and Harvard indicates that mild to moderate wine consumption may be good for your brain. Ongoing studies looking at the effect of moderate wine consumption on decline in cognitive ability over time are showing promising results. The final word is not in and the results must be reproduced by others to be trusted. At the same time, it stands to reason that there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. What's in YOUR wine?

The debate has long been going on about the potential allergen content of wine. Fining agents such as isinglass or milk and egg products are used to remove fine particles from wine. These seemingly harmless food products might mean serious trouble for people allergic to them. The current debate focuses over whether there actually are traces of these substances in finished wines and, if so, do they pose a real health risk to some people. Additionally, would allergen warnings on wine labels serve a public good or would they be detrimental to the industry? Full Story.

You saw it coming.

Sooner or later someone was bound to capitalize on the buzz over resveratrol. It seems Fayetteville, North Carolina - based NFI Consumer Products is at least one company doing just that by releasing their supplement: Resvinatrol Complete. At redwinebuzz.com we recognize this as an alternative to withering one's liver while trying to reduce cholesterol levels by a few points. The final word on resveratrol is not in, however, and may not be for a while. A well-informed consumer may want to read a comprehensive summary of the benefits of red wine and resveratrol.
