Wine in the News:

redwinebuzz.com brings you news from the world of wine. Our goal for this section is not to provide comprehensive coverage of an issue, but to make each entry a gateway to the complete story. The only exception to this is when we are the only source of the story. We seek out stories that are relevant and interesting - whether they are serious or not. Older stories are in our wine news archive.

SF Chronicle Honors Central Coast Winemakers

San Francisco Chronicle's Wine Editor Jon Bonné, has named Josh Jensen Winemaker of the Year. Jensen has staked his claim atop Mt. Harlan. His 624-acre property on limestone soils 3,300 feet above sea level are home to his Calera Wine Company. For over three decades, Jensen has chiseled out his name in the annals of American wine. Bonné describes Jensen's wines as having "...depth and tannic structure rarely found in Pinot Noir made outside Burgundy, vibrant years after most of their California counterparts have gone to seed. They are difficult wines, traditionally made and often not approachable when young. But they offer clear evidence why Jensen deservedly won the 7,400-acre Mount Harlan appellation in 1990". In addition to Pinot noir, Jensen grows Aligoté, Chardonnay and Viognier. Read full article.

John and Helen Falcone were also named one of five Winemakers to Watch. They are an inseparable duo whose skills melt into one potent team. Both have formidable resumes in winemaking. In joining Rusack, John and Helen want to make hand crafted wines. In general, their Rusack wines are complex, showing finesse but not over-extraction. redwinebuzz.com recently reviewed the 2005 Rusack Pinot Noir, Santa Barbara County. Look for a review of the 2005 Falcone Paso Robles Syrah soon.  Read full article.
