Wine in the News:

redwinebuzz.com brings you news from the world of wine. Our goal for this section is not to provide comprehensive coverage of an issue, but to make each entry a gateway to the complete story. The only exception to this is when we are the only source of the story. We seek out stories that are relevant and interesting - whether they are serious or not. Older stories are in our wine news archive.

CA Legislation is Message to TTB, Hope for Paso Robles.

California State Joint Resolution 22, aimed at protecting the option of creating future sub-appellations in California, was passed last week. The TTB suspended the application and approval process for AVA status last year in response to controversy over the establishment of the Calistoga AVA. Subsequently, the TTB has moved to create rules and regulations which may severely restrict the creation of sub-appellations.

The Paso Robles AVA has been abuzz with talk of creating up to 11 sub-appellations for several years now. Insofar that appellations or sub-appellations serve to validate or strengthen a brand, much is at stake for Paso Robles. The Joint Resolution is a California State measure only, but it is hoped that it will send a message to the TTB and affect a change in its regulations. Read full story.

More Santa Barbara County Wineries Found Serving Minors.

In another decoy operation conducted by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department and the state Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) on Saturday February 16th, 14 wineries in the Santa Maria and Snata Ynez valleys were visited by decoys. The Lompoc Record and the Santa Maria times both report that nearly two months after a similar operation, two winery tasting rooms: Foxen and Roblar were found to be serving under-age visitors. Foxen servers received two citations and Roblar servers received one.

The consequences facing those cited include: minimum fine of $1,000 or 24 to 32 hours of community service or both. The wineries, themselves, also face further penalties from the ABC in the form of alcohol license suspensions of 15 to 30 days and fines ranging from $3,000 to $10,000. A permanent revocation of the alcohol license is also a possibility.
