John,

I think that as someone trained in hard science you would agree that there are some pretty incontrovertible facts when it comes to the world of wine.
Those are governed by the rules of the universe. Do we need "watchers to watch the watchers" who point out that somebody got their facts wrong?

Arthur - IMO trying to get bloggers (as though they were some monolithic group) to "do" anything falls somewhere between herding cats and teaching a pig to sing. Just my opinion, mind. But really – the crux of the question is who or what will be the arbiter of "accurate" and "reliable".

John,

What do you think we should focus on, if it is not getting bloggers to deliver accurate and reliable content?

Arthur - great post. RE: the AP and their copyright concerns - well, their raft of lawyers have to prove to their corporate overseers that they are doing SOMETHING, don't they. If I properly attribute and link back to a quote from one of the AP's sources and they choose to come after me for it, I believe my attorney can dispatch the issue with a single letter. They simply have no legal ground to stand on. All the rest is posturing and bullying.

And if you want to get a hoot over the AP meeting with the MBA to hammer out copyright concerns, check out this <a href="http://nielsenhayden.com/makinglight/archives/010354.html" rel="nofollow">fun post</a>.

I had a career as a scientist and published a number of scholarly aritcles. In that community the concept that all references must be fully attributed was sacrosanct, and if one treaded upon it the transgression was usually caught in peer review.

The wine blogging communtiy does not and never will have direct peer review, but if all that comes out of the conference is a commitment to properly attribute and link back to sources it will be a big step.

I have thought on this a long time now, and feel that the focus on "establishing credibility" is misplaced. In the marketplace of ideas, credibility is measured by how many others will attend and believe. I find it appalling how much is out there in the mediasphere that I find to be incredible, unbelievable dreck, but that finds a credulous and believing audience. there you have it. So what that I have a personal commitment to "legacy before currency". You really are Diogenes on this one, sir.
