Corti Brothers looses lease

For Lease - Sacramento's Corti Bros has lost its lease.

Sacramento's Corti Brothers has lost its lease.

After 38 years, Sacramento’s Corti Brothers will close its current location, the Sacramento Bee reported Tuesday. Morton Leslie tipped me about this story earlier today.

Darrell Corti is a respected wine expert and writer who had recently taken a strong stand on the issue of rising alcohol levels in wine. His statements to Alan Goldfarb in the Appellation America interview seemed to indicate that his stance has not hurt business.

That appears to still be the case as Corti reported the store’s annual income to be $8 million (in the article linked above). There is no reason, at this time, to believe that Corti will close shop forever - although it is the last remaining of four Sacramento stores owned by the Cortis.

Morton tells me that Corti continues to purchase wines for his inventory and is looking for a location in the same area of Sacramento. The store’s website includes an announcement:

“The upcoming re-location of Corti Brothers brick and mortar operations in October of 2008 will not effect our internet and mail order customers.”

UPDATE:

August 4th, 2008

The Sacramento Bee published a follow up to this story Saturday, shedding further light on the status of the Corti Borthers store.
