I had this experience over the weekend, not with wine, but with art. I had visited a museum with my younger brother to look at a painting I had last seen 10 years prior with my father. The painting had not changed in all that time, yet I had a completely different experience. It's because I was the one who changed. In 10 years time I have had the experiences and contexts necessary for the artwork to take on a new meaning and form. It's not a romantic notion to say that a painting is trying to convey an emotional or logical message--in fact, some would say the medium merits this form of expression for the artist--it intends to express something. Wine, as an art, is no different. I've seen it first hand with the passion our team has put into their product. They, for lack of a better word, are artists using wine as a medium for expression of the land and their vision. I agree that when I finally have a chance to taste some of the wine I, having been there, will be able to link it back to distinct experiences I've had with its place of origin. However, consider the power of story-telling that art of any form offers. There is a power to story-telling that allows us to experience a place without having been there. Could you imagine if we were reliant on first-hand experience in order to enjoy a story or have it resonate with us? There would be no point to their telling or retelling, regardless of the medium. What's important to realize is that while the story may change, not only between individuals, but for the individual over time, there is still a story and connection be made. There's something to be expressed--if wine cannot express, then it's just another beverage to wash down food.
