Fascincating piece. I find myself vacillating between wanting to examine every detail of a wine, while on the other hand not wanting to take it too seriously and enjoy the "moment", whether social or environmental. Recently I began tasting with more intention than I had for a long while. I found myself rusty and searching for the words and associations that used to come easily. I don't enjoy reading others tasting notes as when I was first learning about wine but I'm beginning to appreciate the vocabulary lessons they provided.

I wonder if it works the other way as well; if language can trick you into smelling something that isn't there...?

Great insight, Arthur. I agree that establishing a better sense of things can be practiced and learned over time. I refer to my lack of coordination when I was younger. I could barely catch a ball when I threw it into the air above me--it was only after countless games with encouraging friends that my motor skills increased. I see no reason why this does not cut across all sensory ability as you mentioned.

Arthur,

A lovely piece, which I can relate too very strongly. I can still remember by experiences as a medical student trying to detect various physical signs - bronchial breathing, the tip of a spleen, the edge of a liver, a pericardial rub etc etc. I remember well the patience of my seniors and their mostly helpful encouragement. Time and practice and the intent to see and hear and in the case of wine the decision to focus your brain on what you smell. These things make all the difference.
