2005 Vintage Summary.
The 2005
growing season ended with a crop larger than previous years. 3.15
million tons of wine grapes were estimated for this crop.
The year was
generally cool and is being compared to the acclaimed 1997 vintage, but
only time will prove this true. The long and cool growing season
preceded by heavy winter rains and without
heat spikes resulted in fruit with good extraction but lower sugar
levels and subsequent excitement over the
quality of wines to
be produced. The slow ripening of the fruit is expected to make for
elegance and balance in the wines of this vintage.
The Santa Maria
valley experienced mild temperatures, budbreak in late February. Limited
rain in early spring yielded to dry, sunny days during the season which
ended in a later, generally cool and dry harvest season.
A later harvest
usually means
that the grapes had a longer time to ripen and mature. However excess
rains can damage a crop at several critical points during the season. In
general, the Central Coast was able to escape rain-related problems. The 2005 growing
season started with spring rains which led to robust vine growth. With a
higher risk of mildew, growers had their hands full managing irrigation,
fertilization and very intensive canopy management starting early in the
season. As a result of this robust growth, growers had to be more
aggressive about dropping fruit to control yields later in the season.
There were no serious heat spikes which allowed even and steady
development of grapes.
Reading the yearly
state vintage reports, it would seem every year is a vintage year. Even
in a relatively constant and minimally varying climate like the Central
Coast, that is not necessarily guaranteed. Best wines, in terms of
balance and integration, still come from long and even growing seasons.
redwinebuzz.com
has been speaking to many winemakers and wine growers in the Central
Coast and at this time, the hype really does reflect reality. However,
the finished wines reflect wine making skill and style as much as they
do quality of the raw materials. While some 2005 offerings display
beauty and grace, others show dizzying (litterally) alcohol levels.
